Separation of Church and State

The separation of church and state means that people have the freedom to choose how or when they want to worship there God, and the government leaders have no say in this matter. Some individuals think that because this country was founded on the freedom of choice, it should be kept this way. There are others who believe that the state should control religion in our country by making only one religion for everyone to worship, like in England, where there is only one religion and the king is also the leader of the church. In this country, there are all types of people with different views and beliefs. That is what makes this country a great place to live in.

One of the many reasons why this country is the leader of the world is because of the First Amendment, which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." This means that the government can not make any type of religious decisions and needs to care for everyone by the same token regardless of their religion. This amendment has worked great in this country.

On January 1, 1802, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to Danbury Baptists. The letter was about the “wall of separation between church and state." This statement was quoted and put in effect by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1878 and has been adopted in many other countries. Thomas Jefferson was an exceptional president and he strongly believed that everyone has the right to choose there religion.
